Initially in the first stage, you will examine the key challenges faced by global businesses to fully appreciate the complexity and dynamics of leadership and management practice. This will see you broaden your skills in organisation, communication and working with others, particularly within an increasingly diverse cultural context.
During the second stage of your course, you will begin to explore the complexity of international operations management integrated with corporate social responsibility, sustainability and the role of innovation. You’ll be taught international strategy while also developing your research skills in preparation for your major project.
The final core Major Project module is tailored to your career aspirations. The module provides three project options;
A work-based study route enabling you to relate the project to a current employer; A ‘consultancy project’ option where you find a client who has an international business problem that you feel you can solve; A traditional dissertation involving an in-depth exploration of both the theory and practice of international business using primary research.
Whatever route you choose, it will give you the opportunity to identify a topic and industry of your choice related to your specialist area of International Business tailoring your degree to enhance your employability for your final chosen career destination. Previous projects have involved International marketing strategy, global supply chain management in the food sector and sustainability issues in the sourcing of cotton.

This module aims to develop your understanding of the main financial objective of the firm i. e. wealth maximisation and how it is achieved through alignment of financial decisions under constraints from within and outside the organisation. The module covers topics such as financial statements analysis, budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, time value money, investment appraisal, working capital management, sources of capital and choice of capital structure. You will be able to understand and apply key concepts and theories in accounting and finance and assess the implications of financial decisions for a business firm.
The module will explore in detail the integrated nature of business functions focusing specifically on marketing and operations. It will give you both a foundation in what business is and how it operates using these two key functional to provide an integrated view of business. The relationships between demand generation and management and the consequential operational implications for production and supply chain management are exposed to ensure you will fully understand the complexity of matching supply-side to demand-side requirements.
This module will provide you with an opportunity to engage and consider contemporary issues in leadership from both UK and international perspectives and how leaders address these within organisations. The module will enable you to develop a critical insight and outlook in order to explore relevant solutions for organisational effectiveness and success. Focusing on challenges faced by leaders and how to address these challenges is a key component of this module. Overall the module will enable you to develop your leadership potential, best practice and through peer assessment gain an insight into a range of business issues that impact on employees.

This module is designed to support you in your transition to Masters-level education at Birmingham City University. You will explore your study skills necessary for academic success by giving you a chance to audit your skills and your readiness for study. You will be required to develop and demonstrate active learning in class and you will receive immediate feedback on your work to help you develop. You will be required to build an ePortfolio to showcase your specific qualities and skills whilst also identifying your plan to improve and development them.
International Strategic Management is a core module for all MSc Management pathways. Strategy is a field that breaks you out of a functional perspective and integrates the functional Stage 1 themes of finance, marketing, leadership and operations to offer a holistic view of an organisation, be that a small or medium sized business or a large corporation in an international context. The exploration of the key strategy concepts in this module reflects the key elements in strategic management and it follows the strategic analysis process. Key components are discussed with up-to-date and international examples and a case study is used to tie these elements together and for application of the concepts discussed.
The module is designed to enable students to gain an understanding of the strategic issues associated with managing the operations of international companies in a changing international business environment, to help them develop a critical appreciation of the operational problems of an international company from the viewpoint of the major business functions. In addition, the module is designed to provide students with a thorough grounding on how organisations might deal with various aspects of innovation and how the development of a robust strategy for innovation can lead to sustainable competitive advantage.

Research Project Practice.
This module reflects the fact that so much of the role of managers is related to researching, devising, planning, implementing and evaluating projects in a multitude of contexts. Project management combines a series of skills, tools and disciplines that help guide people and organisations to effective outcomes. Many of the ideas and techniques will at first seem familiar as they involve needs identification, research planning, information gathering, data analysis, decision making, implementation and control. This module integrates these various concepts and challenges you to develop and apply your knowledge and skills in a chosen organisation context.
Research Methods Practice.
The module is designed to give you the research skills and insights necessary for the study and investigation of business organisations and business-related data. These skills will impact directly on your ability to understanding and evaluating information from a variety of sources and where appropriate undertake primary research. You will become aware of the many tools and techniques that can help judge and interpret research outcomes. Research will be presented as a process to be managed and requiring a number of decisions. You will be introduced to subject matter that will allow you to make informed choices with regards to research methodology and the implementation of quantitative or qualitative approaches.
Stage Three.
This module examines the task of management in today's international and global business environment in general. Specifically, it develops your skills to be able to critically examine the key tasks of management and the theories that underpin them and to advance your understanding and skills in the international business area through a critical understanding of the cross-cultural context of business. By the end of this module, you should be able to develop mastery and criticality through your advanced understanding and skills, and to consider the appropriateness of theory, models and concepts to differing cultural environments.
The Major Project provides the practical and theoretical focus for the MSc Management programme and is the culmination of your programme of study. The aim of this module is to provide a framework for you to undertake a substantial piece of disciplinary-relevant research. This module will enable you to build on and develop your professional management skills such as project management, problem solving, critical analysis and synthesis of data to produce appropriate research outcomes. The format of this practice-led module will vary dependent on the degree pathway you are on. This is a significant piece of project work, the topic of which needs to be agreed with the course team in line with your chosen pathway before you can start work and could take one of the following formats (based on your chosen pathway subject area):
Consultancy Project Dissertation Work Based Improvement Project.
This module is highly relevant to your future career, enabling you to choose a topic that is tailored to your career aspirations whilst providing you with the essential skills on which to base managerial judgement and decision making.

Course Structure.
The course runs for 12 months (full-time, September or January start), or 15 months (full time, September start) and is split into three stages, each lasting at least 10 weeks (with Stage One taking place over two terms on the 15 month pathway only). Assessment is of a practical nature, including assignments, reports, presentations and examinations.
Each module consists a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, online interactive activities and assessments. Typically each module is taught on a weekly basis during term time, consisting of three hours per module per week split into one, two or three-hour sessions. A total of 9 contact hours per week is typical over a 10 week period for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 3 will consist of three hours of contact time per week, supplemented with project supervision meetings as and when required for the Major Project.
Each 20-credit module is designed to require 200 hours of study, of which 30 hours or more will be via direct contact with module tutors. The remaining time will consist of independent learning, which will be structured with guidance from the module tutor to incorporate activities such as online learning, reading and group or team based work.
Emphasis will be placed on the group as a resource for learning. There will be group discussion of practical management situations and problems, making use of case studies, problem situations and scenarios and, where relevant, the participants' own experiences.
Assessment on the programme is designed to be an integral part of your learning process, enhancing and demonstrating your knowledge and practice. Formative feedback will be provided to you through a combination of self-reflection, peer group and tutor feedback. Summative assessments will provide a measure of the extent to you have achieved the learning outcomes of the modules.
Assessment within the modules will take various forms, including coursework assignments, reports, controlled assessment, examinations and the dissertation or project. You may be required to defend the dissertation or project through a viva, drawing on the skills developed in the programme.

The Management and Entrepreneurship MSc is a challenging but highly rewarding pathway that will provide an innovative gateway into starting your own business, as well as helping you develop a legitimate business plan that you can use to start your company. Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), our Management and Entrepreneurship course teaches you the fundamental skills and attributes you need to become a successful entrepreneur.
You will work in internationally diverse student teams, collaborating to deliver effective and professional reports, reflecting the professional practice of international management. What's covered in the course?
At Stage One you’ll become adept at strategic and tactical business decisions, developing core skills in key areas, including finance, people management, operations and marketing. You will examine the key challenges faced by global businesses, to fully appreciate the complexity and dynamics of leadership and management practice. This will see you broaden your skills in organisation, communication and working with others, particularly within an increasingly culturally diverse business context.
Stage Two develops your specialist knowledge, understanding and skills via the New Venture Creation module which specifically focuses on the applied aspects of entrepreneurial activity. In parallel, you will also learn about strategic management and develop your skills in research practice to prepare for your major project.
The Stage Three module of Entrepreneurship in Practice is a lecture and seminar series of specialist topics giving real world practical insights into entrepreneurship practice. You will explore critical issues faced by entrepreneurs, such as entrepreneurship capital, buying a business, succession planning and start-up marketing. You will be given the option to develop your business concept into a substantial piece of research and business plan via the Entrepreneurship Project module. You will be able to self-appraise and reflect on your entrepreneurship skills at all three stages of the programme.

This module aims to develop your understanding of the main financial objective of the firm i. e. wealth maximisation and how it is achieved through alignment of financial decisions under constraints from within and outside the organisation. The module covers topics such as financial statements analysis, budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, time value money, investment appraisal, working capital management, sources of capital and choice of capital structure. You will be able to understand and apply key concepts and theories in accounting and finance and assess the implications of financial decisions for a business firm.
The module will explore in detail the integrated nature of business functions focusing specifically on marketing and operations. It will give you both a foundation in what business is and how it operates using these two key functional to provide an integrated view of business. The relationships between demand generation and management and the consequential operational implications for production and supply chain management are exposed to ensure you will fully understand the complexity of matching supply-side to demand-side requirements.
This module will provide you with an opportunity to engage and consider contemporary issues in leadership from both UK and international perspectives and how leaders address these within organisations. The module will enable you to develop a critical insight and outlook in order to explore relevant solutions for organisational effectiveness and success. Focusing on challenges faced by leaders and how to address these challenges is a key component of this module. Overall the module will enable you to develop your leadership potential, best practice and through peer assessment gain an insight into a range of business issues that impact on employees.
International Strategic Management is a core module for all MSc Management pathways. Strategy is a field that breaks you out of a functional perspective and integrates the functional Stage 1 themes of finance, marketing, leadership and operations to offer a holistic view of an organisation, be that a small or medium sized business or a large corporation in an international context. The exploration of the key strategy concepts in this module reflects the key elements in strategic management and it follows the strategic analysis process. Key components are discussed with up-to-date and international examples and a case study is used to tie these elements together and for application of the concepts discussed.
This module forms part of the pathway for the Master’s in Management and Entrepreneurship, as it facilitates the application of generic learning on business to the evaluation of a business idea to identify if there is a potential business opportunity. Students explore in groups a business idea using the latest insight on idea exploration and service development while practising selected learning in pop-up shops and primary research. You will learn how to pitch a business idea for a minimal viable product or service through carrying out primary and secondary research to analyse and evaluate its value incorporating features, design, benefits and pricing structure.

Research Project Practice.
This module reflects the fact that so much of the role of managers is related to researching, devising, planning, implementing and evaluating projects in a multitude of contexts. Project management combines a series of skills, tools and disciplines that help guide people and organisations to effective outcomes. Many of the ideas and techniques will at first seem familiar as they involve needs identification, research planning, information gathering, data analysis, decision making, implementation and control. This module integrates these various concepts and challenges you to develop and apply your knowledge and skills in a chosen organisation context.
Research Methods Practice.
The module is designed to give you the research skills and insights necessary for the study and investigation of business organisations and business-related data. These skills will impact directly on your ability to understanding and evaluating information from a variety of sources and where appropriate undertake primary research. You will become aware of the many tools and techniques that can help judge and interpret research outcomes. Research will be presented as a process to be managed and requiring a number of decisions. You will be introduced to subject matter that will allow you to make informed choices with regards to research methodology and the implementation of quantitative or qualitative approaches.
Stage Three.
Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity have become the hallmarks to contemporary business organisations both small and large in the globalised business environment. Successful business ventures are born out creativity and innovation and the continued survival of corporate organisations is dependent on their ability to be creative and innovative while promoting a culture of corporate entrepreneurism referred to as Intrapreneurship. This module has been designed to allow you to explore entrepreneurship and how new business ventures are created and sustained. Throughout the module you will be challenged to assess key trends, issues and challenges facing the entrepreneurial business and to propose innovative recommendations and solutions that overcome them.
The Major Project provides the practical and theoretical focus for the MSc Management programme and is the culmination of your programme of study. The aim of this module is to provide a framework for you to undertake a substantial piece of disciplinary-relevant research. This module will enable you to build on and develop your professional management skills such as project management, problem solving, critical analysis and synthesis of data to produce appropriate research outcomes. The format of this practice-led module will vary dependent on the degree pathway you are on. This is a significant piece of project work, the topic of which needs to be agreed with the course team, and could take one of the following formats:
This module is highly relevant to your future career, enabling you to choose a topic that is tailored to your career aspirations whilst providing you with the essential skills on which to base managerial judgement and decision making.

Course Structure.
The course runs for 12 months (full-time, September start) and is split into three stages, each lasting at least 10 weeks. Assessment is of a practical nature, including assignments, reports, presentations and examinations.
Each module consists a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, online interactive activities and assessments. Typically each module is taught on a weekly basis during term time, consisting of three hours per module per week split into one, two or three-hour sessions. A total of 9 contact hours per week is typical over a 10 week period for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 3 will consist of three hours of contact time per week, supplemented with project supervision meetings as and when required for the Major Project.
Each 20-credit module is designed to require 200 hours of study, of which 30 hours or more will be via direct contact with module tutors. The remaining time will consist of independent learning, which will be structured with guidance from the module tutor to incorporate activities such as online learning, reading and group or team based work.
Emphasis will be placed on the group as a resource for learning. There will be group discussion of practical management situations and problems, making use of case studies, problem situations and scenarios and, where relevant, the participants' own experiences.
Assessment on the programme is designed to be an integral part of your learning process, enhancing and demonstrating your knowledge and practice. Formative feedback will be provided to you through a combination of self-reflection, peer group and tutor feedback. Summative assessments will provide a measure of the extent to you have achieved the learning outcomes of the modules.
Assessment within the modules will take various forms, including coursework assignments, reports, controlled assessment, examinations and the dissertation or project. You may be required to defend the dissertation or project through a viva, drawing on the skills developed in the programme.
All of our Management pathways have professional accreditation from CMI, as well as ensuring the courses are relevant and cutting edge, it means also means you will receive a CMI QCF Level 7 Certificate in addition to the Masters degree upon graduating.
You’ll be provided with CMI membership for the duration of the course, benefitting from full access to ManagementDirect, CMI’s market-leading online support tool for managers and leaders. You’ll also be eligible for the CMI’s mentoring scheme and have the opportunity to attend events, helping you network and create industry links.
We also have accreditation from CIM, with two Marketing pathway modules mapped to the CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing, achieving the maximum number of exemptions from the CIM Diploma. On completion of this course, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a four-day block module course which will prepare you to sit the two further exams required to achieve the Diploma in addition to your Masters degree.
